Speedy Restaurant is an autonomous service robot designed to assist waitstaff by transporting food and beverages. It offers flexibility to business owners, enables human staff to focus on managerial tasks, and greets customers with its distinct charm and character, making technology approachable and enhancing the dining experience.

Approach

The look and feel of service robots are integral to their function as they become part of the public space. Valuing form and function equally, and working closely with the Saha Robotik`s engineering team, we achieved seamless integration of sensors and a streamlined silhouette that blends into modern interiors. Speedy Service is designed with a curious and friendly appearance that invites interaction. An integrated screen, displaying a range of facial expressions, serves as an extension of the product's overall form, providing it with a 'face' and personality, rather than just being an isolated screen. The form of Speedy Service creates a sense of direction, making it predictable.

Process

Building upon our previous collaboration with Saha Robotik, our design strategy and language were rooted in this prior work. We closely collaborated with the engineering team from the start, clarifying constraints and areas of creative freedom. Remaining a partner throughout the entire development phase, we ensured that design intentions were not lost in the realization of the concept.

Testing Ground

The media above showcases initial models produced using small-batch production methods. While these models may not capture all the details of the final product, they served as a testing ground, enabling us to iterate and improve based on the insights gained from these prototypes.
